I remember from when I was in elementary school how to make simple Chinese lanterns out of construction paper. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese lunar calendar. And perhaps, to bring some cultural awareness to our community. I thought it would be great for families of Chinese descent (who otherwise might feel isolated and alone) to experience a community honoring their traditions in wonderful surroundings. I have great dreams for this but no idea how it will actually turn out. Lasting 3 to 7 days, depending on the year and where it falls in the calendar. It is held on the 15th of August according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. “Mid-Autumn Mooncakes on the Mountain” is what I have named this event. Chinese mid-autumn festival (, Zhngqi jié) is the second biggest festival a the Chinese New Year. It is a spectacular view with city lights twinkling around the lake. Many people go up there in the evenings just for the view. Chinese poems about the moon in particular were very common during dynastic China, with poets. The moon has special meaning in China, and is the subject of many legends in Chinese mythology. Unlike American Thanksgiving dinner, the Chinese eat moon-cakes instead of grandma’ apple pie. Chinese families celebrate end of harvest season with a big feast. It is held on 15th day of 8th lunar month.
